Business Card Paper Types: Matte, Gloss, and Beyond

Not sure which finish to choose for your business cards? This guide covers every paper type and coating — so you can order with confidence.

Why Paper Type Matters

Two business cards with identical designs can feel worlds apart depending on the paper and finish chosen. Texture communicates values before a word is read: a soft-touch matte card says "refined and considered"; a glossy card says "vibrant and energetic." Understanding the options helps you match the physical card to your brand identity.

Paper Weight (Stock Thickness)

In the US, business card stock is measured in points (pt) — one point equals one thousandth of an inch.

Coating and Finish Options

Matte Laminate

Matte coated cards have no sheen — light reflects diffusely rather than specularly. The result is a soft, elegant look that reads as sophisticated. Colors appear slightly muted compared to gloss, but the finish is easier to read under bright lighting (no glare). Matte cards are also writable — you can jot a note on them with a pen, which can be useful for networking events.

Best for: Minimalist designs, dark backgrounds, law firms, creative studios, consultants.

Gloss Laminate

Gloss adds a plastic-like sheen that makes colors pop and images appear sharper. It's the most widely used finish because it photographs well and has a classic "business card" look. The downside: it shows fingerprints and can be hard to read at certain angles due to glare.

Best for: Photography, vibrant brand colors, real estate agents, retail businesses.

Soft-Touch (Velvet) Laminate

Soft-touch laminate feels like the cover of a premium book — smooth, slightly rubbery, and ultra-premium. It's more expensive than standard matte or gloss but creates an unforgettable tactile experience. Ink tends to appear slightly muted, so use it with designs that rely on typography and layout rather than photographic imagery.

Best for: Luxury goods, fashion, hospitality, high-end professionals.

Spot UV

Spot UV applies a high-gloss UV varnish to specific areas of a matte-coated card — your logo, a pattern, or key text. The contrast between the flat matte base and the shiny highlights creates a visual and tactile "wow" effect. It's the most design-forward finish available.

Best for: Brands that want to stand out at events, creative professionals, luxury retail.

Uncoated (Natural)

Uncoated stock has no laminate or varnish. It feels natural and porous — similar to high-quality writing paper. Colors appear more muted and inks may feel slightly rough to the touch. The advantage: it's easy to write on and feels approachable and organic.

Best for: Eco-friendly brands, artists, handmade goods sellers.

Foil Stamping

Metallic foil (gold, silver, rose gold, holographic) can be applied to specific design elements for a premium look. Often used for logos, names, or borders. Foil cannot be printed on — it's applied mechanically — so foil-stamped areas should contain no fine-detail type.

Best for: Weddings, event planners, jewelry brands, high-end hospitality.

How to Choose

Ask yourself three questions:

  1. What does my industry expect? Finance and law: 16 pt matte or soft-touch. Creative agencies: spot UV or soft-touch. Food and retail: gloss.
  2. Is my design image-heavy or text-heavy? Image-heavy designs benefit from gloss. Minimal text-based designs shine on matte or soft-touch.
  3. What is my budget? Standard matte or gloss = most affordable. Soft-touch + spot UV = premium pricing. Foil stamping = highest cost.

Order Samples First

Whenever possible, order paper samples before committing to a large print run. ProCardCrafters ships sample packs so you can feel the difference between 14 pt gloss and 16 pt soft-touch before placing your full order.
